November 2022 - Healthy Relationships

We hope you were able to try and explore some of the resources from October! We love to hear your thoughts and feedback, as well as any activities you were already doing with your child to foster a positive mindset.

This month our topic is on Conflict Resolution and Maintaining Healthy Relationships. Even as adults it can be challenging to handle conflict and nurture the healthy relationships in our lives, this is why we always value working with students and supporting them as they navigate the challenges that come with both friend and family relationships. Below we will provide some fantastic resources/activities to explore with your children!

One of the biggest signs of a healthy relationship is treating each other with respect and kindness, but what does kindness look like? Here is a read aloud story called "Be Kind" by Pat Zietlow Miller and Jen Hill:

Read Aloud of "Be Kind" by The StoryTime Family

Conflict resolution can be difficult for children as it is usually accompanied by Big Emotions. These Big Emotions can often result in impulsive reactions such as hitting, yelling, or crying. It is important that students understand what they are feeling, the following resource has a compilation of faces with different emotions that students can practice identifying. Different Faces Activity.

Students need to be in a certain emotional zone in order to effectively resolve conflict, below is an activity where students can place different emotions. The goal of these zones is to find ways that the student can move from Blue, Red or Yellow into the Green zone. Emotional Regulation Zones. It is best that a student take time to regulate themselves before handling the conflict, each person is different but here is a resource with a variety of different ideas! Self-Regulation Strategies!

We enjoy hearing from you all! If you have a child in grade 4 or 5 you can contact Brady Green using the NSES number 780-594-3232 or by email brady.green@nlsd.ab.ca. If you have a child in grades K-3 you can contact Dusty Fraser also at the NSES number 780-594-3232 or by email dusty.fraser@nlsd.ab.ca

Our students did OR one student said…

This month we are focusing on building and maintaining healthy relationships. ADD IN HERE WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOUR SCHOOL ie/ At Art Smith we will be teaching students about conflict resolution and friendships.

PROVIDE A STORY OR SHARE A LINK OR a create your own VIDEO related to the topic.

If there are events happening at your school or in the community that link to the topic, you can also share them here ie/ Parent info night focused on anxiety, FCSS hosted session for parents.

Here is some more information about building or maintaining healthy relationships OR here are some activities you may want to do with your children at home that complement what we are doing at school: DO NOT LIST MORE THAN THREE LINKS.  You can use any of the links in this Google Doc except the ones noted at the top of the page.
